Closing Bell: Nifty ends above 17K, Sensex up 384 pts

 

Nifty ends above 17K, Sensex up 384 pts with strong global market support

 

It was a positive start for the Indian stock market on Thursday amid optimistic global cues. The Nifty50 index opened at 17066 levels, up by 110.55 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 320.59 points at 57251.15 levels. The key benchmark indices traded above their neutral lines throughout the day on Thursday.

The market sentiments were positive as around 50 Indian companies are taking part in a three-day business exhibition in Nepal. This is to promote Brand India and enhance bilateral trade and investment by creating awareness about trade opportunities available on both sides.

Besides, to make the ease of doing business and reduce compliance burden, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has pitched for simplicity. He also called for the creating of a single identification number for businesses and individuals by merging several identification numbers that exist presently such as Aadhaar, PAN, TAN, so that delivery of services becomes smoother and faster.

On the global front, Asian markets were closed in the green on Thursday as traders have become optimistic after Taiwan’s unemployment rate dropped in November and technology shares were in focus in Hong Kong. European market Indexes are trading positive as investors bet on hopes that the Omicron Covid variant would not overwhelm health systems and lead to further restrictions.

 

Nifty and Sensex at the Close

 

At the close, Nifty gained by 117.15 points or 0.69 percent and closed at 17072.60 levels while Sensex was up by 384.72 points or 0.68 percent and finished at 57315.28 levels. The Bank Nifty index also gained today, it was up by 161.65 points or 0.46 percent on spot levels and ended at 35191.15 levels.

The broader markets also closed higher today, following their larger peers. The Nifty midcap index was up by 268.20 points or 0.90 percent and closed at 29927.30 levels. The Nifty smallcap index gained by 137 points or 1.27 percent and finished at 10905.90 levels.

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Power Grid, IOC, ONGC, ITC, and Bajaj Finance. Whereas the top losers were Divis Lab, JSW Steel, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, Ultratech Cement.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Dhani Services, Chola Invest, CG Consumer and the losers were Zee Entertainment, Ajanta Pharma, SAIL 

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were First Source Solution, Lux Industries, Radico Khaitan and the losers were Future Retail, PNB Housing Fin, and APL Apollo.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, Bajaj Finance, and Infy. The most active stocks in terms of volume were ITC, SBI, and Tata Motors.

On a sectoral front, barring Media, and Metal all other sectors were closed in the green today. The sectors that led the rally were Realty, FMCG, Oil & Gas, Consumer Durables, and PSU Banks
