Global Stock Market Index Analysis ( 7 Feb – 11 Feb 2022)
The global markets closed in the mixed state during the week. The US key benchmark indices closed in the red for the week. The tug of war between healthy corporate earnings growth and fears over monetary tightening continued to dominate the US market sentiment during the week. The sentiment got hit as the data showed that retail inflation touched the highest levels in four decades.
The upside inflation combined with hawkish comments from the Fed increases the probability of 50 bps rate hikes in the Fed’s next policy meeting in March. The higher 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield and geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine also contributed to the weekly sell-off in the US markets.
European markets advanced during the week ended 11 February. The strong corporate earnings growth supported the markets last week. European markets got further push after ECB President Christine Lagarde’s dovish comment, saying that record-high inflation could subside and approach the central bank’s 2% target in the medium term.
Lagarde seemed to adopt a more cautious stance, saying there is no need to rush for premature conclusions at this point in time for “measurable tightening” of policy. However, the upside remained capped as EC forecast slower growth and higher inflation for the region.
