Weekly Nifty Gainers & Losers (12 July – 16 July) & Global Stock Markets News and Updates: Indian stock market indexes gained more than a percent during the week ended 16 July. The market sentiments were positive due to better than expected inflation data (CPI & WPI), IIP data, DIIs inflow, and positive Q1FY22 results. However, the upside remained capped due to weak global market cues. The global markets especially in the U.S and Europe are concern about a spike in inflation and rising delta variants of Covid-19 cases.

 

Weekly ( 12 July-16 July) stock market updates 

 

On a weekly basis, Sensex gained 753.87 points or 1.44% and closed at 53140.06, while Nifty closed higher by 234.2 points or 1.49% and ended at 15923.25 levels. The Bank Nifty on the spot price was up by 679.85 points or 1.94 % on a weekly basis and finished at 35751.8 levels.

The mid-cap index also gained in line with their larger peers whereas the small-cap index outperformed the benchmark indices The Nifty midcap index was up 468.4 points or 1.71% and closed at 27851.15 levels. The Nifty small-cap index closed higher by 420.7 points or 4.20% and ended at 10447.05 levels

Global stock markets updates

Weekly News and Updates: The global stock markets were closed mixed during the week ended 16 July.

The U.S markets indexes fell during the week, S&P 500 and Nasdaq touched a new high before falling back. Economic growth and inflation data remained in the spotlight during the week in U.S markets. 

The surge in inflation data released on Tuesday and Fed Chair testimony before Congress on Wednesday and Thursday have impacted negatively in the US markets. However, the downside of the US. markets were capped due to better than expected retail sales data and a fall in the weekly jobless claims.

The European markets closed lower on weekly basis due to the concerns that the increasing delta variant of Covid-19 cases could derail an economic recovery. Traders are also worried that central banks might tighten monetary policy soon than expected due to a surge in inflation. UK’s consumer price inflation increased in June, the highest level since Aug 2018. 

Traders are optimistic as the UK will be lifting its remaining Covid-19 lockdown controls from next week, even as the number of infections surges. Whereas, France, Netherland reimposed new social restrictions to curb the spread of new variants.

Other Asian market indexes, Nikkei and Shanghai registered modest gains on weekly basis. Bank of Japan (BOJ) leaves policy rates unchanged but trimmed GDP forecast. The sentiments among manufacturers rise to their highest level since November 2018 but services sectors turned pessimistic in Japan

China’s GDP data for the second quarter released during the week was in line with the expectation. As per market experts, the equity inflows into China via the stock connect channel turned positive after the GDP data, recorded the highest since September. June’s economic data released during the week came stronger than expected in China.

 

FIIs and DIIs data

 

On a weekly basis, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were sellers and Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were buyers in the cash market segments. FIIs sold Rs 2667.16 crores while DIIs bought only Rs 3233 crore in the cash market segment during the week ended 16 July. 

On a monthly basis in July, FIIs were sellers DIIs were buyers in the cash market. FIIs sold Rs 6923.61 crores and DIIs bought Rs 5136.45 crores in the cash market.
