Market This Week (27-31 Dec): Stock Market Analysis

Market This Week (27 Dec- 31 Dec): Stock Market Analysis: The Indian stock markets started this week with an optimistic note. The markets traded positively and gained 2% for the week ended 31 December on the back of buying in the pharma, auto, and telecom sectors. Santa Clause’s rally for the Indian markets ends on a strong note on Friday as both FIIs and DIIs were the buyers in the cash segment. The broader markets outperformed this week as Nifty midcap and smallcap indexes reported a gain of 2.8% and 4% respectively.

Global Market this week ( 27- 31 Dec)

Global stock market this week

Most of the global market reported gains for the week ended 31 December.  Globally, the market volumes were very thin last week, on account of the holiday season ahead of the year-end.

The US market indexes mostly closed in the green. The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed flat to the negative on a weekly basis. The S&P 500 index touched a record high last week despite the surges in Covid cases in the regions. The US markets got support from the positive weekly economic data released during the week.

European market indexes rose in holiday-thinned trade as the new variants omicron fears eased. The trader’s optimism about the economic recovery strengthened as evidence arrived that the latest variant is having a milder effect on economic activity.

The upside of the market was capped as the new variant omicron surged to record levels over Christmas in France, The UK, Italy, and Spain, among other countries. Several countries imposed restrictions, lockdown to curb the spread of Covid infections.

Japan’s stock market index Nikkei 225 was closed marginally higher during the holiday-shortened week. Japan’s industrial production grew at record levels amid easing supply-side pressure. The upside remains capped due to surges in omicron variants and a slight rise in unemployment. The Chinese market Index, Shanghai closed almost flat this week, despite positive manufacturing data and comments from Chinese officials about the country’s beleaguered property sector.

FIIs and DIIs investment

The Foreign Institutional investors were the seller and the Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were the buyers in the Indian stock markets. FIIs sold Rs 2217.1 crores, whereas DIIs bought Rs 4273.55 crore in the cash market segment for the week ended 31 December.
