Nifty 50 end above 18400, Sensex up 468 pts today
Nifty 50 and Sensex Today: Indian stock market indexes opened marginally higher on Monday as indicated by the SGX Nifty in the morning. The Nifty index opened at 18288.10, up by 19.10 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 67.99 points at 61405.80 levels. The domestic markets extended their early gains and started the week on a positive note.

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade in an optimistic mood due to buying by the fund and retail investors. The market sentiments remain upbeat as the gross direct tax collections have grown nearly 26% to over Rs 13.63 lakh crore so far in the current fiscal, mainly due to TDS deductions and healthy advance tax mop-up.
The domestic markets got further support due to the appreciation of the Indian rupee against the dollar. Besides, traders got some encouragement as Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 8 National Highway projects of 226 km worth Rs 1,800 crore at Igatpuri, Nashik, Maharashtra.
On the global front, the other Asian stock markets were mostly closed in red following the negative cues from the US on Friday. Investors fret about ongoing concerns about rising interest rates and global economic recession. European stock markets started the week on a positive note. The market sentiments are positive, as this would be the last week ahead of Christmas.
Sensex and Nifty 50 index at the close today
The Nifty 50 index ended higher by 151.45 points or 0.83 percent and closed at 18420.45 levels while the Sensex gained by 468.38 points or 0.76 percent and finished at 61806.19 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed higher by 194.25 points or 0.45 percent on the spot level and ended at 43413.75
The broader markets also closed higher following their larger peers. The Nifty midcap index was up by 176.75 points or 0.55 percent and closed at 32186.85 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by 46.55 points or 0.46 percent and closed at 10064 levels.
Nifty 50 index top gainers and losers today
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Adani Ports, M&M, Eicher Motors, Power Grid, and Adani Enterpris the top losers were TCS, Infosys, ONGC, Tata Motors, and Sun Pharma
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were BHEL, GMR Airport, and Indiamart Inter and the top losers were Natco Pharma, JSW Energy, and CESC
The smallcap top gainers were UTI AMC, PNB Housing fin, and CSB Bank while the top losers were Welspun India, Chambal Fert, and RITES
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Infy, Reliance, and HDFC Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, ONGC, and Tata Motors
On the sectoral front, barring IT and PSU Bank all sectoral indices closed in green. The sectors that lifted the markets were Auto, FMCG, Metals, Financial Services, and Realty
