Nifty ends above 17200 and Sensex up 477 pts, top gainers and losers for today

 

Indian stock market indexes opened higher on Tuesday amid positive global cues. The Nifty opened at 17177.60, up by 91.35 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 330.97 points at 57751.21 levels. The equity benchmark indexes, Sensex and Nifty traded above their neutral lines today.

Other than the positive cues from Asian markets, the domestic markets got support from the release of strong economic data. The Commerce and Industry ministry showed the data that India’s exports rose by 36.2 percent to $23.8 billion during the first three weeks of December 2021 over the same period compared to last year. Besides, increasing per capita steel consumption and production of special steel as well as enhancing raw material security will remain the key focus areas of the government in 2022.

Meanwhile, the rating agency ICRA expects the Indian economy to maintain real GDP growth of 9.0% each in FY22 and FY23, amidst the uncertainty triggered by the Omicron variants of Covid-19.

On the global front, Asian markets were closed higher on Tuesday, after industrial output in Japan advanced a seasonally adjusted 7.2 percent in November month. The upside remains capped as Japan’s jobless rate growth higher as compared with October and China’s industrial firms grew at a much slower pace in November.

 

Sensex and Nifty at the Close

At the close, Nifty gained 147 points or 0.86 percent and closed at 17233.25 levels while Sensex was up by 477.24 points or 0.83 percent and finished at 57897.48 levels. The Bank Nifty index also gained today, it was up by 125.90 points or 0.36 percent on spot levels and ended at  35183.80 levels.

The broader markets also closed higher today, outperformed the benchmark indices. The Nifty midcap index was up by 351.70 points or 1.18 percent and closed at 30094.85 levels. The Nifty smallcap index gained by 168.65 points or 1.56 percent and finished at 11040.25 levels.

 

Top Nifty Gainers and Losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Sun Pharma, Asian Paints, M&M, Ultratech Cement, and NTPC. Whereas the top losers were Power Grid and IndusInd Bank.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Oil India, Deepak Nitrate, and Ajanta Pharma and the losers were Au small Finance, Trent, and Aditya Birla Fashion.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Ceat, IDFC, and GNFC, and the losers were PVR, Firstsource Sol, and Rossari.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, and Reliance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, and Power Grid.

On a sectoral front, all sectors were closed in the green today. The sectors that led the rally were Auto, PSU Bank, IT, Pharma, and Oil & Gas
