Closing Bell: Nifty ends above 17750, Sensex up 124 pts today

 

Sensex & Nifty 50 at close: Indian stock market indexes erased early losses and closed marginally higher on Wednesday. The market sentiments turned positive in the second half on the back of buying banking stocks.

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 42.95 points or 0.24 percent and closed at 17754.40 levels while the Sensex gained by 123.63 points or 0.21 percent and finished at 60348.09 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 226.70 points or 0.55 percent on the spot level and closed at 41577.10 levels

The broader markets ended higher today in line with their larger peers, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 159.20 points or 0.51 percent and closed at 31119.25 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by 20.05 points or 0.21 percent at 9462.15 levels.

 

Nifty 50 top gainers & losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were IndusInd Bank, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprise, Bajaj Auto, and M&M and the top losers were Bajaj Finance, Hindalco, TechM, Apollo Hosp, and Infy

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Adani Wilmar, BHEL, and PFC  and the top losers were Policy Bazar, Fortis, Compton

The smallcap top gainers were Renuka, Balrampur Chini, and Aegis Chem while the top losers were BSE, IRB, and Medplus

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enterp, Reliance, and HDFC Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, NTPC, and Adani Ports

On the sectoral front, Nifty Auto, Oil & Gas, and PSU Bank ended higher while Realty, Pharma, and IT closed lower to the day.

 

Global stock market updates

 

The other Asian stock market indexes mostly closed in the red following negative cues from Wall Street overnight. Hang Seng dragged more than 2 percent, fueling concerns of a potentially larger hike at the next policy meeting, losses led by consumer cyclical, healthcare, and basic materials stocks. 

Shanghai closed slightly lower while Japan’s Nikkei closed higher on Wednesday. European stock market indexes are trading lower after a hawkish speech from US Fed Chair Powell overnight.
