Nifty above 18100, Sensex up 361 pts, metals shine
Sensex and Nifty at the close today: Indian stock market indexes were traded volatile in a narrow range in the first half on Tuesday. In the last hour, the indexes extended their early gains, as the session progresses and closed higher.
The Nifty 50 index jumped by 117.70 points or 0.65 percent and closed at 18132.30 levels while the Sensex closed higher by 361.01 points or 0.60 percent and finished at 60927.43 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 229.35 points or 0.54 percent on the spot level and ended at 42859.50
The broader markets outperformed the benchmarks today. The Nifty midcap index was up by 306.75 points or 0.99 percent and closed at 31283.75 levels. The Nifty smallcap index gained by 113.20 points or 1.19 percent and closed at 9645.80 levels.
Nifty top gainers and losers today
The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Hindalco, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, ONGC, and Tata Motors and the top losers were HUL, Apollo Hospital, Nestle, ITC, and NTPC
The gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Dhani Services, Jindal Steel, and Indiabulls Hsg and the top losers were Amara Raja Batt, Varun Beverages, and CG Consumer.
The smallcap top gainers were HEG, Nalco, and Graphite India while the top losers were IOL Chemicals, Shilpa, and ThyrocareTechn.
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Tata Steel, Infy, and Adani Ent. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Hindalco.
On the sectoral front, barring FMCG all sectoral indices were closed in the green today. The sectors that led the rally were Metals, PSU Bank, Media, Realty, and Oil & Gas
Global stock market updates
On the global front, the other Asian stock market indexes closed higher on Tuesday, as the sentiments improved after China relaxed its Covi-19 rules and restrictions and canceled the quarantine policy for travelers. European stock market indexes CAC and DAX are trading higher at 3.30 pm while FTSE is not trading today due to Christmas Holiday.
