Nifty ends below 17600, Sensex down 542 pts, Bank Nifty around 41250

 

Sensex & Nifty 50 at close: The Indian stock market indexes extended their losses in the second half and closed lower. The markets were trading volatile due to the weekly options expiry on the NSE.

The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 164.80 points or 0.93 percent and closed at 17589.60 levels while the Sensex was down by 541.81 points or 0.90 percent and finished at 59806.28 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower by 320.35 points or 0.77 percent on the spot level and closed at 41256.75 levels

The broader markets also ended lower today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 170.60 points or 0.55 percent and closed at 30948.65 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 51.25 points or 0.54 percent at 9410.90 levels.

 

Nifty 50 top gainers & losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Tata Steel, LT, Apollo Hospital, Bharti Airtel, and Axis Bank and the top losers were Adani Enterprise, M&M, SBI Life, Reliance, Adani Port

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Linde India, Max Health, and Adani Wilmar and the top losers were TTML, Dixon, and BalKrishna Ind

The smallcap top gainers were Borosil, Balaji Amines, and Manappuram Finance while the top losers were Renuka Sugar, RBL Bank, and Mastek

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enterprise, Reliance, and HDFC Bank The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, NTPC, and Adani Ports.

On the sectoral front, barring Metal all other sectoral indices closed in the red today. The sectors that dragged down the markets were Auto, Realty, PSU Bank, IT, and FMCG

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets closed mixed on Thursday. China’s shanghai ended lower despite the Consumer prices in China were up 1.0 percent in February. China’s latest data showed softening of inflation in February, as the inflation reading was down sharply from 2.1 percent in January, the expectation was 1.9 percent. 

Nikkei closed higher as investors are hoping for a dovish monetary policy, the two-day BoJ meeting has started today. European stock markets are trading lower, as investors digested US Fed chair Jerome Powell’s second day of testimony before Congress and looked ahead to this week’s non-farm payrolls.
