Closing Bell: Nifty ends below 17K, Sensex up 79 points

 

Sensex & Nifty 50 at close: The Indian stock market indexes were trading volatile ahead of the weekly expiry and closed marginally higher on Thursday. The volatility in the markets is due to weekly options expiry and fresh turmoil in Credit Suisse.

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 21.45 points or 0.13 percent and closed at 16993.60 levels while the Sensex was up by 78.94 points or 0.14 percent and finished at 57634.84 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 134.80 points or 0.35 percent on the spot level and closed at 39051.50 levels

The broader markets closed mixed today, as the Nifty midcap index edged up by 60.60 points or 0.20 percent and closed at 30031.85 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 41.70 points or 0.46 percent at 9038.45 levels.

 

Nifty 50 top gainers & losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were BPCL, HUL, Asian Paints, Nestle India, and Titan and the top losers were Hindalco, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel and HDFC Life

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Zeel, Hind Petro, and Hind Zinc and the top losers were Jindal Steel, Oil India, and TTML closed lower

The smallcap top gainers were MedPlus Health, Network 18, and TV18  while the top losers were BCG, KPIT Tech, and Campus Activewear

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, SBI, and ONGC

On the sectoral front, The Media, FMCG, Realty, and Pharma closed higher while the Metals and IT closed in the red.

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, the other Asian markets closed lower following the negative cues from global markets overnight, following a fresh sell-off in the banking stocks amid concern about the debt owes of Swiss lender Credit Suisse. The share price of Credit Suisse fell sharply on Wednesday. 

However, the downside was limited as Credit Suisse says it will borrow up to about $54 billion from the Swiss central bank. Japan’s Nikkei fell as trade data came below expectations in February. Hang Seng and Shanghai also closed lower on Thursday.

European stock market indexes are trading higher as investors got relived after Swiss National Bank said it provide liquidity to safe gourd Credit Suisse
