Nifty below 21700, Sensex plunges 379 pts, dragging down by the Auto & IT sectors

 

Sensex and Nifty Today 2 January 2024: Indian stock markets ended in the red on Tuesday. The domestic markets, after opening flat, traded below their neutral lines on the back of selling in Auto and IT stocks. The market sentiments improved slightly in the second half, and the benchmark indices trimmed some of their intraday losses at the close.

The domestic markets traded negatively on Tuesday following the weakness in Asian peers. The sentiments were also downbeat as the  Provisional data from the NSE showed foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 855.80 crore on January 1. 

Meanwhile, fears over the new Covid variant dampened sentiments in the markets. India reported 197 new cases of the JN.1 variant on Monday the highest cases are from Kerala, while the total number of active Covid-19 infections rose to 4,394 with the detection of 636 fresh cases, according to the INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium) data.

 

Sensex and Nifty Today

 

The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 76.10 points or 0.35 percent and closed at 21665.80 levels while the Sensex was down by 379.46 points or 0.53 percent and finished at 71892.48 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower by 472.65 points or 0.98 percent on the spot level and closed at 47761.65 levels.

The broader markets also closed in the red today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 82.80 points or 0.18 percent and closed at 46389.65 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended lower by 36.20 points or 0.24 percent at 15189.90 levels.

 

Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers 

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Adani Ports, Divis Labs, Sun Pharma, Coal India, and Cipla, and the top losers were Eicher Motors, M&M, LT, Ultratech Cement, and Kotak Bank.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were ABFRL, Mankind, and Lupin and the top losers were Idea, Lodha, and BDL

The smallcap top gainers were JBM Auto, Glenmark, and Campus while the top losers were NLC India, Balaji Amines, and Zensar Technologies.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Coal India. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Coal India, Tata Steel, and ONGC.

On the sectoral front, Pharma, Media, and Energy closed higher while the sectors that closed in the red were Auto, IT, and Realty.

 

Global Stock Market Updates Today

 

The other Asian stock market indexes closed mixed on Tuesday as most traders returned after the New Year holiday. Japan’s stock market was closed on account of the New Year holiday. Australia’s S&P ASX 200 ended higher by 0.49% near its all-time high. South Korea’s Kospi erased early losses and closed higher by 0.54% for the fourth straight session. 

Shanghai was down by 0.43% as the weakened Manufacturing PMI data showed a contraction in December, while the private survey data on Tuesday showed that the manufacturing activity in China expanded in December. Hang Seng extended its early losses and declined sharply by 1.54%. The Straits Times, Taiwan ended lower, while SET composite and Jakarta closed in the green.

European stock market indexes are trading higher, the first trading session of the year 2024. The Oil and gas stocks are trading higher due to a jump in crude oil prices, while Technology stocks are in red. Meanwhile, the US stock futures are trading flat on Tuesday.
