Nifty end at 18165, Sensex up 390 pts, Metal stocks shine

 

Sensex and Nifty at the close today: Indian stock markets extended their early gains and closed higher. The Nifty 50 index gained 112.05 points or 0.62 percent and closed at 18165.35 levels while the Sensex closed higher by 390.02 points or 0.64 percent and finished at 61045.74 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 222.95 points or 0.53 percent on the spot level and closed at 42458

The broader markets closed in the green today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 161.70 points or 0.52 percent and closed at 31379.30 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended almost flat to positive, up by only 5.85 points, and closed at 9670.85 levels.

 

Nifty index top gainers and losers today

 

The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Hindalco, Tata Steel, Larsen, UPL, and HDFC and the top losers were Tata Motors, HDFC Life, Ultratech Cement, Adani Enterpris, and  BPCL.

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Tata Tele Services, SAIL, and Patanjali Foods, and the top losers were  Bank of India, Delhivery, and Indian Bank

The smallcap top gainers were Just Dial, Rail Vikas, and APL Apollo while the top losers were Delta Corp, Radico Khaitan, and Quess Corp.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and Adani Enter The most active stocks in terms of volume were  Tata Steel, Tata Motors and ITC

On the sectoral front, sectors led the rally Metals, Financial Services, Pharma, Banking, and IT. The sectors that closed in the red were PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, and Auto

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets mostly closed in the green. Japan’s Nikkei rallied the most by over 2 percent after the latest data showed that industrial production increased in November. Japanese yen fell and stocks rose on Wednesday after the country’s Central bank maintained its ultra-low interest rate and kept intact its yield curve control (YCC) targets.

European stock market indexes are trading flat looking for a direction at this moment. The UK inflation data showed that consumer price inflation eased in December even after economists had expected the rate to be unchanged.
