Market Today: Nifty ends near 17400, Sensex up 874 pts
Nifty and Sensex Today 21 April 2022: Indian stock markets made a higher opening on Thursday amid positive cues from other Asian markets. Nifty opened at 17234.60 levels, up by 98.05 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 421.1 points at 57458.60 levels. Indian markets gradually extended their early gains and closed on a positive note today.

The traders got encouragement after a positive statement made by the top official from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday. According to IMF officials, the successful macroeconomic management of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a strong recovery of India’s economy. This is because the country is in a better position to face the economic fallout of the current Ukrainian crisis.
Further, the stability in crude oil prices and support from the global markets helped the domestic to trade higher today. Adding more optimism among traders, retirement fund body EPFO said it added 14.12 lakh subscribers in February 2022, 14 percent more than 12.37 lakh enrolled in the same month compared to the previous year.
On the global front, the other Asian markets mostly closed in the green on Thursday, Hang Seng, Shanghai, and Taiwan closed in the red as the IMF chief said the prolonged China slowdown raises the risk for the global economy. The European markets are trading mostly in the green at this moment at 3.30 pm IST
Nifty and Sensex indexes at the close today
At the close, the Nifty index gained 256.05 points or 1.49 percent and closed at 17392.60 levels while Sensex was up by 874.18 points or 1.53 percent and finished at 57911.68 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher today by 501.20 points or 1.38 percent on spot and ended at 36816.10 levels.
The broader markets were closed higher in line with their larger peers. The Nifty midcap index gained by 324.05 points or 1.07 percent and closed at 30603.30 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed higher by 161.20 points or 1.55 percent and finished at 10571.05 levels.
Top Nifty gainers and losers
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Eicher Motors, Coal India, M&M, Maruti Suzuki, and Adani Ports whereas the top losers were Cipla, Tata Steel, Hindalco, ONGC, and JSW Steel.
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were L&T Finance, Manappuram Fin, and Apollo Tyers and the top losers were ICICI Securities, Jindal Steel, and Emami
The smallcap top gainers were Chambel Fert, Edelweiss, and Future Retail and the top losers were Kalpaturu Power, BEML, and PVR
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and INFY The most active stocks in terms of volume were Coal India, HDFC Bank, ITC
On a sectoral front, barring Media all other sectoral indices closed higher today. The sectoral indices that led the rally were Auto, Financial Services, Banking, IT, and Pharma.
