Closing Bell: Nifty holds 17500, Sensex down 139 pts today
Sensex & Nifty at close: Indian stock markets were trading volatile in a tight range and ended in the red on the monthly F&O expiry day. The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 43.05 points or 0.25 percent and closed at 17511.25 levels while the Sensex was down by 139.18 points or 0.23 percent and finished at 59605.80 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended flat to positive, up by 5.65 points on the spot level, and closed at 40001.55 levels
The broader markets also closed in the red today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 45.35 points or 0.15 percent and closed at 30165.65 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 7.15 points or 0.08 percent at 9237.65 levels.
Nifty top gainers & losers
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Hindalco, Coal India, Axis bank, ITC, and SBI and the top losers were Asian Paints, Larsen, Divis Labs, Adani Enterprise, IndusInd Bank
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Tata Teleservices, Delhivery, and Indian Hotels and the top losers were Vodafone, Adani Wilmar, and Zee Entertainment
The smallcap top gainers were Karur Vysys, RITES, and Sonata while the top losers were IRB, Graphite India, and CSB Bank
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Adani Enterprise, and Reliance. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, ITC, and ONGC
On the sectoral front, PSU Bank, Metals, FMCG, and Bank closed in the green today. The sectors that closed in the deep red were Realty, Media, Consumer Durables, and Financial Services.
Global stock market updates
On the global front, Asian markets were closed mixed as traders digested the minutes of the US Federal Reserve`s most recent monetary policy meeting. The Bank of Korea held its interest rates at 3.5%, a first after nearly a year of rate hikes, and in line with expectations. Japan’s stock markets were closed on Thursday due to a Public holiday. Hang Seng closed slightly lower but the IT index gained today. Shanghai also fell marginally lower today.
European stock market indexes are mostly trading higher as investors digested the latest FOMC minutes amid a barrage of corporate news, with results from the likes of Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, and Anglo-American.
