Nifty ends near 17850, Sensex down 311 pts, Oil & Gas, Banks drags

 

Sensex & Nifty at close: Indian stock markets opened higher on Monday, as indicated by the SGX Nifty in the morning. The domestic markets turned negative in the morning deals and extended their losses at the close.

The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 99.60 points or 0.56 percent and closed at 17844.60 levels while the Sensex was down by 311.03 points or 0.51 percent and finished at 60691.54 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended in the red, down by 430.05 points or 1.05% on the spot level, and closed at 40701.70 levels

The broader markets closed mixed today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 24.85 points or 0.08 percent and closed at 30666.90 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 32.35 points or 0.34 percent at 9385.20 levels.

 

Nifty top gainers & losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Divis Labs, Ultratech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Hindalco, and Power Grid and the top losers were Cipla, Adani Enterprise, Britannia, BPCL, UPL

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Delhivery, Fortis Health, and Coforge Ltd and the top losers were Tata Tele Services, Vodafone Idea, and Adani Wilmar

The smallcap top gainers were Sonata, Happiest Minds, and Bharat Dynamics while the top losers were Shilpa, Alok Industries, and Future Retail

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enterp, Reliance, and ICICI Bank The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Stee, SBI, and Tata Motors.

On the sectoral front, barren IT and Auto all other sectoral indices closed in the red, the sectors that dragged down the markets were Oil & Gas, Banking, Financials Pharma, and Metals

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian stock market indexes were closed mostly in the green, as investors look ahead to a series of economic data later this week, including FOMC minutes, and US GDP numbers. Shanghai closed 2 percent higher after the Peoples Bank of China left the 1 and 5-year prime loan rate unchanged as widely expected.

European markets are trading flat and are trading with low volume as US markets are closed today due to a public holiday and little in the way of corporate news to provide any direction.
