Top Gainers and Losers NSE: Indian markets declined almost 2 percent during the week ended 23 April. The rising coronavirus cases, restrictions and lockdown at several states, FIIs outflow, and weak global cues dragged down the markets during the week. The market sentiments were also negative as foreign brokerage houses and rating agencies lowered India’s GDP forecasts due to the second wave of coronavirus infections.  

The Indian markets started the week on a pessimistic note due to the surges of coronavirus infection across India and restriction/lockdown imposed in several places. Except for Thursday, markets traded negatively on all other days during the truncated week. The Indian market was having a holiday on 21 April on account of Ram Navami.

Sensex on a weekly basis fell 953.58 points or 1.95% and closed at 47878.45 levels while Nifty closed lower by 276.5 points or 1.89% and ended at 14341.35 levels. The Bank Nifty on the spot price made a negative closing of 255.15 points or 0.80% on a weekly basis and finished at 31722.3 levels.

The midcap index fell more than one percent while the smallcap index closed flat to the negative during the week ended 23 April. The Nifty midcap index slipped 267.9 points or 1.13% and closed at 23492.75 levels. The small-cap index closed lower by only 13.05  points or 0.16% and ended at 8250.55 levels

Weekly Global markets updates 

 

Global market weekly updates

 

Most of the global markets closed lower during the week ended 23 April. The US markets were traded volatile, the major indexes swung widely in both directions. The US markets started the week lower and then rebound in the mid-week. The markets fell sharply on Thursday on the report that President Biden is considering nearly doubling capital-gain taxes on the wealthy. But the strong economic data and week’s corporate earnings rebounded the markets on Friday.

European markets also slipped during the week on concerns that rising coronavirus could slow the pace of economic recovery. These fears overshadowed the strong corporate earnings. The European markets closed lower despite the strong flash PMI numbers. The market could not gain on a weekly basis, even after European Central Bank ( ECB) has kept its policy unchanged and assured to increase the pace of bond purchasing. 

It was a disappointing week for the Japanese market. The sentiments are still negative due to the worries about rising coronavirus cases in the country. Japanese markets slipped during the week on the fears of possible lockdown in major cities. The Jibun Bank flash PMI shows the manufacturing sectors are expanding while inflation remains concerned in Japan. The Chinese market closed higher during the week

 

FIIs and DIIs Investment in the cash market

 

On a weekly basis, FIIs were the seller and DIIs were the buyers in the cash market segments. FIIs sold Rs 4986.35 crores whereas DIIs bought Rs 6224.14 crores in the cash market segment during the week ended 23 April. On a monthly basis, FIIs sold Rs 8236.62 crores while DIIs bought Rs 7689.45 crores in the cash market.
