Closing Bell- Sensex Nifty end lower as auto, banks drag today

 

Sensex and Nifty Today 2 March 2022: Indian stock market indexes opened lower on Wednesday, tracking global markets peers and as suggested by the SGX Nifty in the morning. Nifty today opened at 16593.10, down by 200.8 points while Sensex made a negative opening of 617.98 points at 55629.30 levels. Indian market slipped as the Russia-Ukraine war continues to worsen on the seventh day today.

 

Stock Market News Today

 

The market sentiments were negative due to the slow growth of the country’s GDP number released on Monday evening. The sentiment got hit further as crude oil prices touched a multi-year higher and crossed above $108. Investors were worried about its impact on the economic growth in the Q4FY22. 

The Nifty Auto index was under pressure today as Automobiles companies reported mixed performance in February 2022. The passenger and commercial vehicle segments continued to recover due to chip availability whereas domestic two-wheeler and tractor segments reported a YoY decline in wholesale volumes.

Meanwhile, investors took note of the PMI data, which shows India’s manufacturing sector expands in February. The IHS Markit Manufacturing PMI data rose to 54.9 in February from 54 in January

On the global front,  other key Asian market indexes closed in the red taking the global cues. Japanese firms increased Capex in December end quarter as corporate sentiment got boosted due to cline in Covid-19 cases in the region. Asian markets witnessed a second successive month of outflows in February as investors shifted risker assets to safe-haven assets due to rising tension between Russia and Ukraine and on fears of aggressive monetary tightening by the US fed. European markets are trading mixed at this moment.

Sensex and Nifty indexes at close

 

At the close, the Nifty index declined by 187.95 points or 1.12 percent and closed at 16605.95 levels while Sensex was down by 778.38 points or 1.38 percent and finished at 55468.90 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed lower by 832.50 points or 2.30 percent on spot and ended at 35372.80 levels.

The broader markets closed mixed today. The Nifty midcap index was down by 6.35 points or 0.02 percent and closed at 28217.10 levels. The Nifty smallcap index jumped by 49.05 points or 0.50 percent and finished at  9893.70 levels.

 

Top gainers and losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Coal India, HDFC Life, SBI Life, Tata Steel, and Hindalco whereas the top losers were Maruti Suzuki, Dr. Reddy’s Lab, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, and Hero Motor Corp.

The midcap top gainers were Hind Zinc, Oil India, and Adani Total Gas and the top losers were CG Consumer, City Union Bank, and Endurance Tech

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index was Aegis Logistics, MCX India, and  KEI Industries the top losers were Linde India, Kajaria Ceramics, and Lux Industries.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Tata Steel, HDFC Bank, and Hindalco. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Coal India, Hindalco, and HDFC life.

On a sectoral front, the metals, media, and oil & gas closed in the green today  The sector that closed in the red were Auto, Banking, Financial, Pharma, and FMCG
