Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty ends marginally lower amid volatility, 17 Feb 2022

 

Indian stock market indexes opened higher on Thursday amid positive cues from other Asian markets. Nifty today opened at 17396.55 levels up by 74.35 points while Sensex made a positive opening of 221.01 points at 59217.69 levels. Indian markets erased their early gains immediately after opening and traded volatile throughout the day.

The global markets remained cautious on Thursday after Russian media reported that rebels in eastern Ukraine had accused Kyiv government forces of using mortars to attack their territory. The global markets become volatile in the morning session, as US and European futures fell while traders preferred government bonds. The oil prices also erased some of their losses after the news.

Meanwhile, traders took note of the Reserve Bank of India ( RBI) article stating that the manufacturing sector will need continued policy support for smoother and faster recovery to attain the long-term trend path. It said although the sector may soon attain its pre-Covid levels. Though the process of attaining the long-term trend levels may take some time.

On the global front, most of the other Asian markets closed in the green. Nikkei closed lower as Japan’s export grew less than expected and the trade deficit also soars. European markets are trading mixed at this time at 3.30 pm IST

At the close, the Nifty index was down by 17.60 points or 0.10 percent and closed at 17304.60 levels while Sensex declined by 104.67 points or  0.18 percent and finished at 57892.01 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed lower by 422.15 points or 1.11 percent on spot and ended at 37531.65 levels.

The broader markets underperformed today, as the Nifty midcap and smallcap indexes closed in the red. The Nifty midcap index was down by 88.65 points or 0.30 percent and closed at 29201.30 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 109.40 points or 1.04 percent and finished at 10441.80 levels.

 

Top Nifty Gainers and Losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Tata Consumer, HDFC, ONGC, Reliance, and HDFC Life whereas the top losers were Ultratech Cement, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, and UPL.

The midcap index were Shriram Transport, Navin Fluorine, Cummins and the losers were Dhani Services, Alembic Pharma, Manappuram Fin

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Quess Corp, Affle India, Bharat Dynamics, and the top losers were Trident, Edelweiss, and Just dial.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance, Tata Motors, and HDFC. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Motors, ONGC, and ICICI Bank.

On a sectoral front, barring FMCG, and Oil & Gas all other sectors closed in the red today. The sector that dragged the markets were Banking, Pharma, Media, IT, and Financial Services.
