Sensex and Nifty index end flat ahead of US inflation data expected later today

 

Indian stock markets opened lower on Friday tracking the negative cues from the global markets. The Sensex opened at 58696.71, down by 110.42 while the Nifty index made a negative opening of 40.8 points at 17476.05 levels. The benchmark indices traded below their neutral lines most of the day. In the end, the Sensex and Nifty index closed marginally lower on the last day of the week.

The market sentiments were subdued as traders failed to take support with the private report that expects the economy to continue to show positive surprises and record up to 9 percent growth in the next fiscal. In the current Financial year also, it anticipates growth to be higher than the consensus forecast of 8.4- 9.5 percent and printing in at around 10.5 percent,

On the global front, Asian markets were mostly closed in the red as investors avoided big bets ahead of US consumer inflation data for November due later today and also the Fed’s meeting next week. Investors preferred to stay away from the markets as Federal Reserve is expected to double the pace of tapering in asset purchase program to $30 billion per month. European market indexes are trading in the red as renewed concerns about the omicron continue to weigh, while investors await key US inflation data expected later today.

At the close, the Nifty index fell by 5.55 points or0.03 percent and closed at 17511.30 while Sensex was down by 20.46 points or 0.03 percent and finished at  58786.67 levels. The Bank Nifty index closed flat to positive today, it closed higher by 23.20 points or 0.06 percent and ended at 37105.65 levels.

The broader markets outperformed today compare to benchmark indices. The Nifty midcap index was up by 247.85 points or 0.80 percent and closed at 31203.05 levels. The Nifty smallcap index was gained by 89.90 points or 0.81 percent and finished at 11251.20 levels.

 

Top Nifty Gainers and Losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Asian Paints, Grasim, SBI Life, SBI, and BPCL. Whereas the top losers were Divis Lab, Titan, HDFC, Tata Consumer, and Kotak Bank.

The Nifty midcap top gainers were IDFC First Bank, Bank of India, Polycab, and the losers were Oil India, Dalmia Bharat, Whirlpool.

The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index was TV18 Broadcast, IEX, and Bajaj Electric and the losers were BEML, Tanla Platforms, KEI Industries.

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC, Reliance, and Asian Paints. The most active stocks in terms of volume were ITC, Tata Motors, and IOC.

On a sectoral front, PSU Bank, Media, Realty, Oil & Gas, and Auto sectors closed in the green. The sectors Consumer Durable, Healthcare, IT, FMCG, and Financial Services closed marginally lower today
