Sensex and Nifty: Saturday’s Market Highlights and Top Gainers and Losers
Sensex and Nifty Today 20 January 2024: Indian stock markets ended in the red on Saturday- the special trading session. The domestic markets opened higher tracking the positive cues from Wall Street overnight and erased all early gains as the session progressed. In the last hour, markets traded below their neutral lines and closed in the negative territory.
The market sentiments were upbeat in the morning deals on account of buying heavyweight stocks including HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, NTPC, and Power Grid companies’ stocks. Traders took note of the Reserve Bank of India’s report that India`s foreign exchange reserves saw a mild uptick of $1.6 billion to $618.94 billion as of January 12, 2024.
However, the upside remained capped as the labor ministry said that retail inflation for farm workers and rural laborers increased marginally to 7.71% and 7.46% in December 2023 compared to 7.37%t and 7.13%, respectively, in November due to higher prices of certain food items.
Sensex and Nifty Today
The Nifty 50 index closed lower by 50.60 points or 0.23 percent and closed at 21571.80 levels while the Sensex was down by 259.58 points or 0.36 percent and finished at 71423.65 levels. The Bank Nifty index gained the most, ended higher by 357.05 points or 0.78 percent on the spot level, and closed at 46058.20 levels.
The broader markets outperformed their larger peers today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 246.85 points or 0.52 percent and closed at 48062.80 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended higher by 31.45 points or 0.20 percent at 15518.90 levels.
Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Coal India, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprise, Kotak Bank, and ICICI Bank, and the top losers were HUL, TCS, M&M, IndusInd Bank, and HCL Tech
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were RVNL, IRFC, and NHPC and the top losers were Policy Bazar, Poonawala Fincorp, and Voltas.
The smallcap top gainers were RITES, IDBI, and HFCL while the top losers were Jejas, Network, CESC, and Aegis Chemical.
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and Kotak Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Coal India, Tata Steel, and ONGC.
On the sectoral front, Media, Bank, and Financial Services closed higher while the sectors that closed in the red were FMCG, IT, and Realty.
