Stock Market Today 17 Oct: Nifty Closes Above 19,800, Sensex Gains 261 Points
Stock Market Today, 17 Oct 2023: Indian stock markets ended higher on Tuesday amid positive global cues. The domestic markets opened higher and continued to trade in fine fettle throughout the day.
The street paid no heed to a private report stating that unemployment rates continue to remain high among people qualified with a diploma or degree, though some progress has been made in the last five years. It said there`s a notable gap between job opportunities and those seeking jobs, which might take time to narrow.
Stock Market Indexes Today
The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 79.75 points or 0.40 percent and closed at 19811.50 levels while the Sensex was up by 261.17 points or 0.39 percent and finished at 66428.10 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended higher by 183.60 points or 0.42 percent on the spot level and closed at 44409.50 levels.
The broader markets also closed higher in line with their larger peers today, as the Nifty midcap index was up by 142.70 points or 0.35 percent and closed at 40733.35 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended higher by 113.30 points or 0.88 percent at 13054.95 levels.
Nifty 50 Top Gainers & Losers
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were BPCL, Power Grid, SBI Life, HDFC Life, and Coal India and the top losers were Tata Motors, L&T, UPL, IndusInd Banks, and TCS.
The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were FACT, IRFC< and Oil India and the top losers were Mphasis, Dal Bharat, and KPIT Technology
The smallcap top gainers were MRPL, Latent View, and Suzlon while the top losers were Anupam Rasayan, GNFC, and BLS.
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were HDFC Bank, Reliance, and ICICI Bank. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, Power Grid, and HDFC Bank.
On the sectoral front, All sectoral indices ended in the green with Energy, Fin Services, and PSU Banks gaining the most.
Global Stock Market Updates Today
The other Asian stock market indexes mostly closed higher on Tuesday following gains from the US markets overnight. Japan’s Nikkei ended higher by 1.19 percent while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 closed higher by 0.42 percent as investors assessed the minutes of its central bank’s last policy meeting.
South Korea’s Kospi extended its early gains and added 0.97 percent. Shanghai index snapped a three-day losing streak and closed higher by 0.31 percent, while Hang Seng finished higher by 0.75 percent. Elsewhere, the Straits Times, SET Composite, and Jakarta closed higher, while Taiwan ended in the red on Tuesday.
European stock market indexes are trading mixed on Tuesday, UK’s FTSE is trading higher while CAC and DAX are trading slightly lower. Investors a waiting for corporate results and continue to assess the conflict in the Middle East.
