Stock Market Today 22 Aug 2022: Indian stock markets opened lower on Monday amid negative cues from the global markets. Nifty today opened at 17682.90 levels down by 75.55 points while Sensex made a negative opening of 279.06 points at 59361.06 levels. The domestic markets extended their early losses today and closed in the deep red.

Other than the negative global market cues, the domestic market sentiments were downbeat as the minutes of the August monetary policy review indicated more interest rate hikes in the coming months as the retail
Inflation remained elevated much higher than the RBI comfort zone. Traders were also anxious as the country’s foreign exchange reserves slumped by over $2 billion in the week ending August 12, as the Reserve Bank of India intervened to shore up the rupee and keep the INR below Rs 80 per dollar.
On the global front, the Asian market indexes mostly closed in the red today amid concerns over global economic slowdown, after hawkish comments from the US fed officials. Shanghai closed higher as China’s Central bank trimmed the key interest rate to boost economic growth.
European markets are trading in the red following negative global cues and concerns about economic growth in the region.

Nifty 50 and Sensex at the close today
The Nifty 50 index was down by 267.75 points or 1.51 percent and closed at 17490.70 levels while the Sensex declined by 872.28 points or 1.46 percent and finished at 58773.87 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower today by 688.20 points or 1.77 percent on the spot level and ended at 38297.75
The broader markets underperformed the benchmarks, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 625.50 points or 2.02 percent and closed at 30379.50 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower today by 153.85 points or 1.63 percent at 9303.95 levels.
Nifty top gainers and losers today
The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were Tata Consumer, ITC, Coal India, Britannia, and Nestle whereas the top losers were Tata Steel, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, Tata Motors, and JSW Steel
The midcap top gainers were Dhani Services, Sun TV, and Dr. Lal Path Labs and the top losers were Varun Beverages, Trent, and Jindal Steel
The top gainers in the Nifty smallcap index were Sequent Scientific, Affele India, and RITES and the top losers were EID parry, GNFC, and Future Retails
The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, and reliance The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, ONGC, and Tata Motors
On the sectoral front, all sectors closed lower today. The sectors that dragged the markets were Metals, Realty, PSU Banks, Auto Financial Services, and Banking.
