Stock Market Today: Nifty end above 17900; Sensex reclaims 61K

 

Stock Market Today: Indian stock markets were trading in fine fettle and closed sharply higher on Tuesday. The sentiments were positive and indexes gradually moved northward, as WPI inflation slipped to 4.73% in January from 4.95% recorded in the previous month, the market expectation was 4.5%  

The Nifty 50 index closed higher by 158.95 points or 0.89 percent and closed at 17929.85 levels while the Sensex was up by 600.42 points or 0.99 percent and finished at 61032.26 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended in the green, up by 366.15 points or 0.89% on the spot level, and closed at 41648.35 levels

The broader markets underperformed the frontline index today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 83.55 points or 0.27 percent and closed at 30481.80 levels. The Nifty smallcap index closed lower by 37.35 points or 0.40 percent at 9350.70 levels.

 

Stock Market Today-top gainers & losers

 

The top gainers in the Nifty 50 index were UPL, ITC, Reliance, Adani Ports, and Adani Enterprise and the top losers were Eicher Motors, Apollo Hospital, SBI Life, BPCL, and Grasim

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Oil India, Guj State Petro, and Poonawala Fin and the top losers were Adani Wilmar, PB Fintech, and Navin Fluorine

The smallcap top gainers were Cochin Shipyard, Ircon Internati, and Cyient while the top losers were Sun Pharma Adv, Spice Jet, and Sunteck Realty

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Adani Enter, UPL, and ITC. The most active stocks in terms of volume were Eicher Motor, Apollo Hospital, and Grasim

On the sectoral front, Metals, FMCG, PSU Bank, IT, and Financial Services closed higher while Realty, Auto, and Pharma sectors closed in the red.

 

Global stock market updates

 

On the global front, Asian markets were mostly closed in the green following the broadly positive cues from US markets overnight, as traders picked up the recently beaten-down stocks. Japan has announced its nomination of Kazuo Ueda as the new Bank of Japan governor. Hang Seng erased intraday gains and closed marginally lower ahead of the US inflation data.

European stock markets are trading slightly higher on Tuesday, as investors are looking ahead to the US inflation reading that would give an indication of further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserves.
