Stock Market Today: Nifty, Sensex end red; Media, FMCG drag

 

Stock Market Today: Indian stock markets traded volatile on the weekly expiry day and closed in the red today. The Nifty 50 index declined 81.20 points or 0.45 percent and closed at 18107.85 levels while the Sensex closed lower by 187.31 points or 0.31 percent and finished at 60858.43 levels. The Bank Nifty index ended lower by 129.15 points or 0.30 percent on the spot level and closed at 42328.85

The broader markets also closed in the red today, as the Nifty midcap index was down by 34.70 points or 0.11 percent and closed at 31344.60 levels. The Nifty smallcap index ended lower by 47.25 points or 0.49 percent and closed at 9623.60 levels.

 

Nifty index top gainers and losers today

 

The gainers in the Nifty 50 index were UPL, Coal India, ONGC, BPCL, and SBI Life and the top losers were Adani Ent, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, and Kotak Bank 

The top gainers in the Nifty midcap index were Persistent, Hind Zinc, and Polycab  and the top losers were Torrent Power, Zee Ent, and Guj State Petro 

The smallcap top gainers were KEI Industries, Kalpaturu Power, and Ujjivan Small while the top losers were Rallies India, Alok Industries, and Aegies Logistics

The most active stocks in the Nifty index in terms of value were Reliance Adani Ent, and IndusInd Bank The most active stocks in terms of volume were Tata Steel, ONGC, and Coal India

On the sectoral front, barring Oil & Gas, and PSU Bank all other sectoral indices closed in the red. The sectors that dragged the markets were Media, FMCG, Consumer Durables, Metal, and Auto.

 

Global stock market today 

 

On the global front, other Asian markets were closed mixed, following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight, on renewed concerns over the economic outlook and recession fear as disappointing US data showed a more than expected drop in retail sales and industrial production. 

Meanwhile, Volume in the Chinese market was very low due ahead of the Lunar New Year. Taiwan market was closed through January 30 for the Lunar New Year holidays. European markets are trading lower due to the concern about the U.S. slowdown after Wednesday’s economic data.
